The Online Archive – even after EWS is gone

Microsoft is switching off EWS

Microsoft is retiring Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online. Since October 2026, EWS is being disabled step by step across all organizations: anyone still using EWS has to allow each application individually by its App ID. By April 2027, EWS in Exchange Online is to be fully disabled. On-premises Exchange Server is not affected.

Many tools lose the archive

The successor is the Microsoft Graph API. But general access to In-Place Archives through Graph is still on Microsoft's own roadmap – so many Graph-based tools can't reach the Online Archive at all.

Lookeen searches it via Graph

Lookeen Server's Microsoft 365 connector indexes the Online Archive through the Graph API. Your archived email stays searchable – no matter when EWS is switched off in your tenant.

A note on public folders

Microsoft doesn't plan a Graph API for public folders in Exchange Online. Lookeen indexes them through its EWS-based connector for as long as EWS is available in your tenant – talk to us about planning ahead.
